Brassneck Theatre & The Devenish Complex
The Context
The Devenish Complex includes function rooms, bars and restaurants and is a popular venue for live music and entertainment on the outskirts of Belfast.
Brassneck Theatre Company produces quality theatre in West Belfast, endeavouring to break the pre-conceptions that exist about this part of the city. The company plays an integral part in everyday West Belfast society and their work reflects all citizens and is accessible to all.
The Challenge & The Solution
Through research and given the increasingly difficult economy, Brassneck were aware that many families from areas of social deprivation would struggle to attend pantomimes in the flagship venues here. Continuing to lead the way in terms of social and class inclusion, they set out to produce a high-quality, affordable and accessible, alternative pantomime for Belfast audiences.
With the business partner’s support, the ’People’s Panto - Cinderella’ took place in The Devenish Complex from 6th-21st December 2023. Over 1600 members of the public from local communities and over 1200 students from local primary and secondary schools attended the performances, many of whom gave feedback that they would not have otherwise been able to afford to attend a Christmas show this year.
The Results
The aim was to make the arts accessible to local communities and people from disadvantaged backgrounds. Over 2800 adults and children from local schools and communities attended. A child ticket at the next cheapest pantomime in Belfast was £18, this was just £8. Brassneck audience numbers increased from 4000 in 2022 to over 6000 in 2023 overall due to this project. Their partnership with the Devenish was strengthened as a result of Arts & Business NI investment.
