Since 2016, Plays Aloud has grown into a multi-annual programme of music, comedy and theatre touring four professional dementia trained performers into dementia-homes, folds, sheltered living and care homes across Northern Ireland. This project was adapted in 2020 into a digital performance, watched from the television sets of care-homes across NI. Over the last 18 months, we have delivered 6 new performances and gained public recognition from the press, industry professionals and even singing sensation Daniel O’Donnell.
Over the last 3 years Plays Aloud has: • Reached over 3000 beneficiaries who would not otherwise have access to the arts • Improved audience’s mental health by evoking memories, reinforcing identity and strengthening relationships between beneficiaries and carers or family members. Engagement with Arts, and nostalgia based music and poetry projects are proven to slow mental decline • Improved social inclusion - new communities grow, attributable to our performances. Performances attract residents who might otherwise not engage, who become more likely to join in other similar activities following Plays Aloud.
With a growing swell of interest, we have more homes than we can possibly reach. Your support will allow us to expand to new homes, increase beneficiary numbers and build awareness of the programme. It will also support Research and Development, improving the programme as a whole and diversifying its output to benefit beneficiaries and support staff to the greatest possible degree.
